Earlier this spring, the Ford Mustang officially became the best-selling sports coupe in the world for the fourth year in a row, according to Ford. Ford celebrated the victory on the 55th anniversary of the classic pony car — April 17.
The Mustang is certainly popular here in the US, but this distinction solidifies its success in countries all around the world — in Australia and Peru, for example, as Ford notes. In total, Ford sells the Mustang in 146 different countries. In 2018, Ford sold a total of 113,066 Mustang models, per data from IHS Markit. This data also confirms that the Mustang is the best-selling sports in the United States, as Ford sold 75,842 Mustang models here in the U.S.
“We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” commented Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets. “Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”
The Mustang is seeing extraordinary sales growth. Ford attributes much of this to the Mustang Bullitt, resurfacing from the 1960s as a modern-day sports car.
