Ford officially announced that the F-150 will be getting both an electric and a hybrid design in the future, and we can’t wait to see it.
The F-150 is the best-selling vehicle on the market, but it’s been lagging behind in one area: an electric version of this iconic pickup. This void has led Ford engineers to start developing an electric Ford F-150 to provide car shoppers with durability, capability, and a fuel-efficient powertrain.
According to Motortrend, the hybrid version of the F-150 will hit the market in 2020, and the all-electric version would eventually follow after it. One holdup is that electrifying the F-Series powertrains tends to sacrifice power, which is one reason Ford has had much success in the pickup truck segment.
“We are constantly looking at new ways to better serve our truck customers, from materials to features to propulsion systems,” Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg told us. “We are not specifying timing. We don’t have any other details to share at this time.”
Ford has rolled out EV models in the past, but with little success. However, the brand is partnering with Volkswagen to develop new EV technologies — many of which are likely to make their way into the new EV F-Series.
