At the Los Angeles Auto Show last November, Jeep® stunned the crowd by unveiling the Jeep® Gladiator pickup. It was quite the departure for a brand whose current lineup is exclusively off-road-ready SUVs. What may be even more shocking is the entrance the Gladiator made, ascending a set of stairs to show its true off-road prowess.
According to USA Today, the new Jeep® Gladiator is built on the Wrangler SUV platform. It is a Wrangler restyled as a pickup — a smart move by Jeep®, as Wrangler sales were up 25 percent in 2018. Entering the mid-size pickup segment with the Gladiator cannot come at a better time for Jeep®, as the segment as a whole has doubled in market share over the last four years — from 1.5 percent to 3 percent. The Gladiator will battle mid-size pickups like the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and the new Ford Ranger. Rumor has it that Tesla and Volkswagen are either developing or considering mid-size pickups as well.
The Jeep® Gladiator is long overdue. Fans have long been asking for one — especially since Jeep® redesigned the Wrangler last year — and they now have their wish.
