Road & Track hosts an annual contest in which it awards one sports car with the title of Performance Car of the Year, and this year the award went to the 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R. After testing such performance vehicles as the Bentley Continental GT3-R, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, and Dodge Viper ACR among many others, Road & Track found the Ford Mustang to be the best of the best when it comes to muscle cars.
The Mustang Shelby GT350R features a 5.2–liter V8 engine that cranks out 526 HP, and it was this incredible level of power and performance that lead to the car winning the vote by a landslide. Plus, the Mustang was more affordable than many muscle cars tested, with the most expensive being the $347,942 Ferrari 488 GTB – five times more expensive than the Mustang Shelby GT350R.
It is not just the 2016 Mustang’s excellent delivery of power and performance but also the affordability and connection to the public that makes the Mustang Shelby GT350R a great choice for the Performance Car of the Year. The Mustang nameplate has a long, legendary history under Ford’s brand name, and it is still gaining recognition for its excellence and quality to this day.
